Melanie was honored as one of the 50 best performing employees of her Fortune 500 company. Her company flew these employees to the Big Island for three days of relaxation, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, boogie-boarding, hiking, dining and entertainment by fantastic local musicians. Prior to planning to elope, we had planned on extending both the start and the end of our trip for a total of 9 days.
Melanie and I have been together for almost fifteen years and engaged for almost seven of those fifteen. We had planned what seemed like a hundred fascinating weddings at unique sites but were never able to realize any of them. Wedding planning is a lot of work and while we have great memories of going to weddings full of friends and family, the idea of eloping in Hawaii suddenly seemed like exactly the right thing for us to do -- easy, low-key, beautiful, unique, spontaneous and 100% focused on the celebration of our own love for life and for each other. We also value two things that the Hawaiians value: respect for others and respect for the land.
Approximately 1-2 weeks prior to leaving for Hawaii, we began looking for wedding coordinators. We knew we wanted a wedding in Hawaii, but not neccesarily a Hawaiian wedding. We also wanted to honor Mark's Catholic upbringing without having a traditional Catholic wedding. The third coordinator we spoke with was quite obviously the right one for us -- Debbie Cravatta of Paradise Weddings Hawaii. We cannot thank her enough for all she did for us -- from inviting us to her unique and inspiring church service, finding top-notch musicians and photographers and to fulfilling Mark's last-minute, 5PM-night-before-the-9am-wedding panic call to arrange for flowers, champagne and chocolate at our post-wedding cabin getaway out at the edge of civilization.
Melanie had already purchased her dress in San Francisco and shoes in India. Mark bought a tuxedo, new shoes and cuff links at Nordstroms in San Francisco. We picked and purchased wedding rings which we received days before we left. Despite what seemed like half of the Stonestown shopping center knowing of our plans, we had managed to keep it a complete secret form our family & friends.
